Tips On Making Church Banners: Easy Way to Make Tassels

Tassels and ropes are another way to adorn a banner. Traditionally, you can use a nice twisted satin or metallic/satin combination rope that is about a quarter inch diameter or 3/8 inch diameter. The length would depend on how you want to drape it. It can be draped from one side, swagged across the top, and down the other side. The ends of the rope will need a tassel to give it a finished appearance. You can buy tassels and figure out how to attach it to the end of the rope, but that can become costly. In this article, I will show you how you can easily make your own tassels without spending much at all.
You will need a hot glue gun, possible a drill, spray paint, decorative rope, 8 inch piece of half inch decorative trim and about a foot long piece of 4 inch length fringe and small wooden balls that have a hole through them. The fringe can be bought online or perhaps found in your local fabric or craft store. Use whatever color will work with your banner. The wooden balls can be found in your local craft store. They are usually sold in a bag of 4 or 6. The balls may have a hole from one side but not all the way through. If you can find a wooden ball with the hole all the way through, that would be easiest. Or you may want to use a wooden bead or other decorative bead. You want the size of the ball or bead to be at least one inch diameter or larger. If you can only find wooden balls with a hole part way through, you will need to drill the hole all the way through to the other side.
Drilling the hole might be challenging. I use a vice clamp attached to my work table to grip the ball while I drill. You should use a drill bit that is a size that will accommodate the diameter of the rope you will use. The actual drilling is easy because you already have the hole started. However, if you force the drill too much, you could end up splitting the wooden ball. Next, I spray paint the balls. I string the balls onto a small dowel or you can use a long pencil. That makes it easy to paint while you hold one end of the dowel and turn it as you spray to get complete coverage. I use metallic gold spray paint. Then I add a clear spray coat when the gold is dry.
Take the rope and cut it to the length you desire. You should always tape the rope before making the cut so the rope does not unravel. Now you take one taped end of your rope and thread it through the hole in one of the painted balls or beads. Thread it all the way through so the rope end comes out the other side. Now cut about 6 inches of the 4 inch length fringe. Have your glue gun hot and ready. Run a small bead of hot glue onto the top part of the fringe all the way across the 6 inches. Now take the end of the rope that extends beyond the wooden bead and position about half an inch of the rope end onto one edge of the glued top of the fringe. Roll the rope over the glued part so that all the fringe top is wound around the rope's end. You want to work quickly so the glue does not get cold. Now slide the wooden ball that is already threaded on the rope down to meet the rolled top of the fringe that you just glued to the rope end. Put hot glue at the top of the rolled edge and press the ball firmly onto it. You are almost finished. Your tassel should look like a painted ball atop a fringed bottom that is neatly attached to the rope end.
Now all you have to do is use the decorative half inch trim or ribbon to cover the top of the fringe... just below where it attaches to the bottom of the wooden ball. You can easily hot glue it around that section to give your tassel the final touch. Do the same procedure to the other end of the rope. Now you have a beautiful rope with tassels to adorn your church banner.
