Patch Updates and Management Explained

By

When a new computer program gets released it is not unusual for users to notice that at certain times they may experience the odd problem with its operation, this will typically happen at the same point every time and it is a sign that all is not well with the program. When a problem like this happens, the software company and programmers who developed the software will usually produce and release a software update, which is often known within the programming industry as a patch.
How The Patch Works
A software patch helps to repair and correct the problems caused by glitches in the original program that may have been overlooked or gone undetected when it was originally made. This has the benefit of correcting the problem without having to reload the entire program from scratch.
Because the patch has only enough information to correct a specific problem it is a lot smaller in size than the complete version of the program and due to its smaller size they use up less bandwidth and because there is less information, they can be downloaded quicker. You do need to bear in mind that the patch will not work if you have not got the proper program installed on your computers hard drive.
There are two methods of patching that can update a program, and these are called, binary patching and whole file patching. Binary patching involves two versions of the file being analyzed so that only the corrupt data is replaced. Whole file patching involves replacing the whole of the original file which in some cases can be quicker because the program does not need to search for the part of the program that has become corrupt.
Tools for Patch Management
Patching software is easy if you only have one or two computers to look after, however, if you are in charge of say 50 or more computers then you are going to find that patching is a time consuming process. The last thing you want to do is have to patch the software of programs on each individual computer and that is something that is going to be very time consuming indeed. Thankfully there is a way to circumvent this problem. Using a patch management tool will help you to save the time and effort it takes to patch the software on a number of computers by doing all the hard work for you. You just run the patch management program and via the server it will correct the problem on each computer you select.
Implementing automated patch management is the best way to keep your computer systems up to date and running smoothly. If you are interested in doing just that then you might want to purchase Batch Patch.
