Expert Author Kevin S Nimmo
Dr. York Yates, MD, Salt Lake City was born and raised in Davis County, Utah. Dr. Yates attended and received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from The University of Utah in Salt Lake City.
Graduating at the top of his class in medical school provided Dr. Yates with the opportunity to pursue his passion of training in the field of plastic surgery. Spending six years in postgraduate training at The University of Missouri provided a wealth of experience in all realms of plastic surgery. The areas of primary focus for Dr. Yates included cosmetic surgery, reconstructive surgery, micro surgery and hand surgery.
Today Dr. Yates operates a state of the art plastic surgery facility in Salt Lake City. He offers his patients a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. We were fortunate to take a few minutes out Dr. Yates busy schedule to have him familiarize us with the "Tummy Tuck" cosmetic procedure.
Doctor Yates, what exactly is a "Tummy Tuck" and who is the best candidate for the procedure?
Dr. Yates: A Tummy Tuck is a cosmetic procedure. It's a surgical method of helping a woman or a man achieve a tighter, flatter more shapely abdomen. The ideal candidate for the procedure is varied.
Most commonly it's someone whose abdomen has been affected by pregnancy or weight changes. There are a number of other indications as well but those would be the most common.
What kind of results can a patient expect from this procedure? Is this something that is going to make an overweight individual look different?
Dr. Yates: The results are dramatic. This is not a subtle operation with subtle results. This is one of those procedures where the patient can really expect a huge change in their body type.
The patient can expect tight skin, near complete removal of stretch marks depending on where those stretch marks sit and a tightening and flattening of the abdominal wall.
As far as the overweight individual is concerned they will look substantially different but there is a point where the patient is too overweight for this procedure. For those individuals, weight loss methods outside of the tummy tuck are better options. The results are much better if the weight loss precedes the tummy tuck.
Can this be considered a shaping procedure for the individual who has lost a substantial amount of weight?
Dr. Yates: If someone has lost a lot of weight one of the negative side effects to losing all that weight is the excess skin that comes with it. This is a procedure that helps to get rid of that excess skin.
What about post-pregnancy? Is this a procedure that is effective for women that want to get back in shape after having a baby?
Dr. Yates: This is ideally suited for the post pregnancy abdomen. With pregnancy women lose muscle support, they get some separation of the abdominal wall. Often times they get some extra skin from the stretching during pregnancy and some stretch marks. This will tighten all of that up together.
What do you recommend after the procedure is performed? Is there anything a patient can do to maintain the look the surgery has helped them achieve?
Dr. Yates: There's a lot they can do to hurt the results. The two most significant would be subsequent pregnancies and subsequent and substantial weight gain.
Making sure that a woman is done having babies and has hopefully completed her last pregnancy before the tummy tuck is important. Maintaining sound diet and exercise principals and maintaining a healthy weight is important as well.
That's not to say a woman couldn't have an additional baby or people couldn't gain weight. It's just going to hurt the result a little bit.
Is this a procedure that requires a hospital stay?
Dr. Yates: Certainly not in my practice. Abdominoplasty is an outpatient surgery in my practice but that philosophy is different from surgeon to surgeon. There are some plastic surgeons that insist in a night in the hospital afterwards, that's certainly how I started my practice.
The general trend is moving towards outpatient surgeries with improved recoveries and less risk.
Dr. Yates, what is the biggest consideration a prospective patient should make when deciding on something like a tummy tuck procedure?
Dr. Yates: Picking the appropriate plastic surgeon is probably the most important consideration. Having open, steady lines of communication so that physician can understand the patient's goals well enough to explain expectations, outcomes and risks.
Doctor, thank you for spending time with us today.
Dr. Yates: You're very welcome.
